Primarily business records of a merchant of Enfield, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts acting as an individual and in various partnerships. Investment records include documents relating to a forge in Enfield, an aqueduct in Springfield, land in Colebrook, New Hampshire, and the Springfield drug store of Bontecou & Thayer, started by Daniel's son William Ely Bontecou. Daniel's personal papers include military appointments, 1800, 1802; correspondence, primarily from his brother-in-law Menzies Rayner; estate papers; legal records such as powers of attorney and guardianship documents; and correspondence and policies related to the Springfield (Mass.) Fire Insurance Company.
